It’s officially fashion week and we couldn’t be more excited to give you a behind the scenes look at our favorite activity for fall– attending fashion shows and presentations including Jonathan Simkhai, Veronica Beard, Libertine, Alice & Olivia, Theory and more. We’ve been witnessing the fresh release of designer collections for years now, thanks to both of our careers in the industry.
A little fun fact: Alex’s first job in New York City was at a PR agency where she learned the ins and outs of fashion shows and the not-so-glamorous aspects of the production side of things. And Michael also has experience putting on a show from start to finish.
Between the two of us, we’ve really seen it all!
What’s changed today is the majority of shows are no longer taking place in the tents of Bryant Park or Lincoln Center; instead they are scattered throughout the city in beautiful hotels and various studios and showrooms.
As you can imagine, traveling from each of these locations can get pretty tedious–we’ve sat in our fair share of traffic to reach some of our favorite designers. However, we have to say, it’s all be worth it because this year’s collections are absolutely stunning.
We’ve seen all of the must-have trends of the moment, while also getting a preview of what’s coming for Spring 2019. Many brands are showcasing more “wear now, buy now” pieces that are easily accessible in stores. Naturally, we’ve got our eye on some amazing items for you which we will be sharing soon!
Planning for NYFW
One of the biggest questions we get is– “How do you dress for fashion week?” So, here’s our top tips for showing off your best street style in the most stylish moment in NYC.
Plan ahead. Since we attend multiple shows throughout the week, sometimes within one day, we like to plan our looks in advance. Being the organized duo that we are, we have a rolling rack of outfits that we pull from all week long.
Keep it classy. There’s no question that some fashion bloggers and influencers like to go over the top with their looks– not just to stand out, but to express their style. Us? We’re more conservative with what we wear. So, we recommend wearing a pair of jeans with a cool hemline, a button up blouse, and a blazer with a great accessory to tie it all together. No need to wear a “costume” to fashion week.
Now, on to our favorite trend of the moment: suiting up. From plaid dresses, to classic blazers (as mentioned above), to vests, it’s time to add a touch of sophisticated to your wardrobe.
Style Tip: Take a cute cropped blazer and pair it back to a blue wax pant for a more casual look. And vice versa– take a plaid pant and pair it back to a tee for a night out. Also don’t be afraid to experiment with all of the vest styles and textures at play right now.
