Destination Dressing: Resort Essentials

Packing smart can be a challenge any time of year, but it’s especially so when you have to shift gears and prep for another climate. We took our trunks down to Miami for two weeks last month, which made us rethink our resort essentials. On one hand, we were excited to be escaping the winter and ready to try some of the season’s new styles. But at this point in the year, packing beachwear and colorful outfits felt a little foreign.

To make things easier, we divided up our essentials for destination dressing into two categories: day and night. For day, don’t forget your bathing suit, cover up, sunglasses and beach bag. Come night, you’ll be glad you packed a chic dinner look and a playful party dress.

Even with such a concise packing list, there’s a fine line between covering the trends in a functional manner and full-on overpacking. The key is a combination of versatile clothing and accessories that work from brunch to beach to dinner and everything in between. Below find our five favorite pieces for keeping luggage light but those resort looks on-trend.

A Mini Dress
Warm weather means mini dresses are a welcome option for any occasion. A day of shopping, out to dinner with friends or a night out on the town–a cute mini can really go from day to night. We love a mini with a sleeve, but if you opt for a sleeveless one you can always layer it with a light jacket so you don’t feel like you’re showing too much skin.

A Maxi Dress
The maxi dress is a resort MVP for its fashion-forward versatility. A low-maintenance piece that brings a big impression, we love a breezy maxi with a chunky heel for dinner out. The same dress can double as a super chic beach cover up, too.

Statement Earrings
The right accessories can create a stylish look without taking up all the space in your suitcase. For day, we suggest adding on-trend hoops to your beach look (we love the fun options by Alison Lou). For night, add a touch of glam to your mini dress look with a bold statement earring.

Bold Colors
Resort is the ultimate time to play with color. Pink in particular is having a big moment, spanning all shades of the feminine hue. Change up your typical nighttime look with a long-sleeved hot pink mini dress. Or, style your favorite white jeans with a light pink cardigan. Pink is also pretty in this season’s top styles, like floral prints, silk fabrics and bouncy bows.

An Outer Layer
The weather happened to be a little cooler when we were in Miami this time of year, so a light layer was very necessary. We always recommend grabbing your Spring leather, or a cute jacket in denim or plaid, in case the temps unexpectedly drop.
