How to Pack for Holiday Travel

How to Pack for Holiday Travel

Traveling for the holidays? It’s guaranteed to be a good time once you arrive, but packing for a trip can be less than fun. Over the past few weeks we helped you take the stress out of shopping for your loved ones, and now we’re shifting the focus to taking care of you. It’s important to take time for yourself as you prep for the holidays, so you can feel your best when you’re with family and friends.

Having the right look on hand is a surefire way to keep your spirits bright this month. If you need some advice for staying fashionable on your travels, follow the three packing rules we always adhere to.

Have a photoshoot
We can all agree on how frustrating it is to arrive at your destination only to open your suitcase and wonder why you packed one thing and why you forgot the other. That’s why Alex always takes pictures of every look we put together. Plan your looks ahead and take photos on your phone to ensure you bring everything you need while alleviating the day-of pressure of not knowing what to wear. We especially love that doing this shortens your getting-ready time and gives you more time to spend with friends and family. Plus, it will help make your suitcase a little lighter!

Pack prepared
Once we have our core outfits prepped, we always add two extra looks. Maybe your mood will change or maybe your plans will; either way, come prepared with two extra looks just in case things get switched up. This also allows for a more flexible wardrobe. Remember that you might pick up a few new items as gifts or fun purchases on your trip, so you’ll be glad to have options for what to pair them with.

Stick to a color scheme
If you stick to a generic color scheme (i.e. black, gray and white or brown, cream and tan), you won’t need to bring an overwhelming number of accessories. Alex might be guilty of packing a few too many handbags, but if you’re trying to pack on the lighter side, sticking to a color palette will help to eliminate excess bags or shoes that you’d just wear once. Pack pieces that are versatile and can be worn a couple of different ways, like carrying your beach bag as your everyday tote.

We know that packing can be tricky when you’re traveling this time of year. Perhaps you’re planning to spend the holiday at home with the family and prefer more laidback looks. Or, your holiday trip might be packed with plans with friends, for which you need more fashion-forward outfits. The other factor is weather: you could be traveling somewhere much warmer or colder than your current location.

We put together some of our favorite festive looks depending on the climate of your final destination.

If you’re headed somewhere chilly, here’s some inspo as you pack for your…

Family Dinner: This is the time to bring out that ugly (or fabulously fashionable) sweater and pair it back to your skinny jeans or leather pants. Knee high boots or booties are the perfect accessory for this look. Don’t forget a cozy teddy bear coat as your top layer.

Blouse: L’Agence

Night Out With Friends: We get this question all the time: How can I look stylish when it is freezing outside? Don’t be scared to bare some skin even during the coldest days. One of our favorite options for doing so is a statement top, preferably in a velvet fabric or with sequin detailing. If you prefer to keep it cozy, go for an oversize maxi or midi sweater dress styled with chic boots. We are also very into a full-on blazer look (like you’ll see on Instagram this week!) in all velvet with a touch of sequins. You can wear this blazer with leather pants or a velvet skirt.

Blouse: Theory // Skirt: Stella McCartney // Heels: Manolo Blahnik

If you’re going on a warm weather getaway, we suggest these looks for your…

Family Dinner: Being with your family doesn’t mean you need to mute your fashion sense. Stay stylish in a silk button down blouse with jeans, a tight off-the-shoulder top with a high waisted trouser or a knit skirt worn with a bodysuit or sweater.

Blazer: Self Portrait // Skirt: Hartly Fashions

Night Out With Friends: Get that minidress out! This is a silhouette that you cannot go wrong with this time of year, and we’re loving it with long sleeves, sleeveless or off the shoulder. There are so many different fabric options out there, so you can easily find a lightweight (read: heat friendly) style both at high and low price points.

Dress: A.L.C
