Menswear to a T

We’re bringing new perspectives and personalities to the Style Diary! Every week, a different member of our team will pen their own piece, giving you a little insight into who they are while sharing the must-know tips for the latest trends. This week’s post comes from our co-founder, Michael Toccin.

As the creative behind the Stylists to a T team, I spend most of my days focusing on women’s fashion. Identifying the top trends and providing inclusive styling suggestions is my expertise, but I’m excited to touch on a different topic this week: menswear. Today’s post is for the guys, and I’m covering everything from my most trusted basics to must-have winter apparel.

Let’s start with the ground rules, because proper menswear doesn’t have to be high maintenance. Just follow my three pillars for styling menswear to a T:

  1. Keep your look clean
  2. Buy high quality basics that you can easily mix and match on a daily basis
  3. Up your fashion factor with selective, on-trend purchases, like a cool coat or sneaker

I’m all about elevated basics, as a few key items can achieve a polished look with minimal effort. Here’s why every man’s wardrobe needs a:

Navy Blazer: A fashionable alternative to basic black, a navy blazer can take you right from the office to dinner. It’s also so versatile that you can wear it with dress slacks and dark denim alike.

White Bonobos shirt: This piece speaks for itself, but a nice quality yet affordable white shirt makes an outfit look extra crisp.

Good belt: This is where I say, spend the money! A nice belt elevates any look.

Hair product: You can be wearing the most sophisticated outfit and still look unpolished if your hair is disheveled. Grooming is important, and using just a little product in your hair can change your whole look. I personally make my own hair cocktail using American Crew and Sexy Hair (all available at CVS and Amazon!).

Finding the best basics is easy when you know what brands do it well. Take a shortcut with my list of favorite lines for your whole look.

  • Clothing: Bonobos, AllSaints, Moncler, Save Khaki United, Ralph Lauren, Isaia, Barakat Bespoke
  • Accessories: Investment items like a good watch and an Hermes belt
  • Shoes: Common Projects, Adidas Stan Smith, Gucci, Santoni

Wondering what to wear this winter? My hands-down favorite piece is my Canada Goose parka, which I wear every day. I don’t know about other men, but I literally throw this jacket on at the beginning of January and never take it off. It takes me from desk to dinner to formal. In other words, it is my walking duvet cover, and what I like most is that I invested in it three years ago and it’s still in style.
