The Complete Guide to Statement Outerwear

The Complete Guide to Statement Outerwear

As we get our fall dressing down to a T, the statement jacket is quickly becoming the MVP of our wardrobes. Cooler weather calls for even cooler outerwear, and fall is the perfect time to invest in a new coat. Autumn’s outerwear offerings are seriously exciting: will you alternate between trench styles, rendered in leather, or opt for heritage tweeds? No closet is complete without the ever-practical puffer down jacket (styled with sharp tailoring now, by the way). We’re also feeling all the tartan and checked coats that are currently being served up in a kaleidoscope of colors.

The first big buy of the season, have some fun choosing a fashion-forward piece. Start with our guide to the five most popular statement silhouettes.

Robe Coats
The robe coat is one of our favorite recurring fall trends, and it has become a cold-weather staple for good reason. In fact, the overarching message from the Autumn/Winter 2018 runways was that it’s time to invest in a super sumptuous belted coat. A few tips for getting this look right: the robe coat should be cinched at the waist, oversized enough to hunker down when it’s chilly, and ankle-grazing in length. We’re definitely seeing more long coats than short ones this year, and this silhouette fits right in. We love it in a solid color as much as the plaid patterns we’ve been eyeing lately.

Teddy Bear Coats
You can see a similar shape and aesthetic in teddy bear-style shearling coats. If you’ve ever wished you could take that cozy feeling of home with you when you step out into the world, this coat will be a game-changer for you. As more and more comfy coat styles drop and new outerwear trends start gaining traction, we’ve found a cozy-cool design that you’ll love to wrap up in. The teddy bear coat — a.k.a. this winter’s must-have piece of outerwear — feels just as good as its name implies.

Padded Jackets
If you’re all about comfort, you’ll love this trend, too. Thick, puffy jackets are not only super warm but also one of the fashion set’s favorites. Quilted, padded and puffer styles are coming in different cuts, from traditional to asymmetrical hems. We’ve seen this style in various bold hues, or more muted with pops of bright color, as well as with zipper and button detailing. Try a padded jacket in a trendy black, high-gloss finish, or in silver, the season’s “it” color. Styling tip: layer a padded jacket over your favorite dress for a touch of femininity.

The parka might be the most classic component of all fall wardrobes. Versatile and timeless, this chic silhouette can be found in both lighter and heavier materials, making it work for the early autumn months and the colder temps alike. We’re also seeing oversized parkas layered over a jacket or cardigan for extra warmth (and style!). Change things up from the traditional neutral parka and opt for one in a bold color, or even one with colorful faux fur accents.

It’s official: capes are the new trench. Bring the drama in this truly statement-making shape, which is seen hanging on the shoulders and buttoned at the neck. More traditional trend lovers will opt for soft, classic cold weather materials, while fashion-forward dressers will reach for a cape in a bold pattern or with a pop of color. This can be a fashionable option for those living in warmer climates too; you can easily find this posh piece in a lightweight material.

Now that we’ve covered this season’s must-have statement outerwear trends, let’s talk styling. Coats are one category to really invest in since you’ll be wearing them so much throughout the season. From department stores to smaller retailers, there’s obviously a ton of product in the high-end outerwear marketplace, and it can be tough to sift through the endless options to find that perfect jacket of the season.

We are huge fans of Moncler and Canada Goose for a heavier puffer/down coat, but if you are looking for something more fashionable, our first stops are: Saks (department store), The Westside (newest coolest boutique in NYC), and Hartley Fashions (online and in-store boutique). All three of these retailers offer options from the brands we mentioned above, including contemporary styles starting from $300 to high-end options.

But fashion forward jackets don’t necessarily have to be investment pieces. Just look at Wylie Grey’s lower-end fall jacket lineup. They have a variety of the silhouettes (not to mention fabrics, colors, patterns and everything in between) that we mentioned above–with plenty of options for under $300. We are always looking for fun ways to amp up your wardrobe in an inexpensive way, and this is the perfect place to do so.

A few more brands that we are loving right now include:

Hunter Boots: You would not believe the price point of Hunter’s amazing collection of puffers. As you can imagine, the signature Hunter quality is carried through from their boots to their women’s jacket line. We specifically love the pops of color options that they offer, like this pink puffer.
Samantha Sipos: Known for leather jackets with detachable fur collars, we are excited about the new Samantha Sipos items coming out for Resort–especially the shearling bomber jackets. Another alternative to a leather jacket, this cozy bomber offers a nice tailored fit, not too oversized.
RQL Furs: Talk about statement outerwear! All of the silhouettes offered at RQL Furs are complete with a fun accent. What we love most is that no matter where you live, you can invest in one of their pieces, since they offer bomber, sweatshirt, denim and parka styles.
